July 23, 2016 – NEWH/Arizona’s first philanthropic event of the year was held at ICM Food and Clothing Bank in downtown Phoenix. ICM (formally known as Interfaith Cooperative Ministries) helps by providing an immediate response to families in need. ICM helps to meet basic needs by supplying food, clothing and shoes, soap and shampoo, baby formula, and other material goods six days a week and offering free medical clinic services once a month. NEWH members volunteered their time to help ensure 165 families in need received clothing and toiletries.

ICM accepts financial contributions and welcomes those who are able to donate their time. In addition, material goods are always appreciated to keep ICM stocked for clients. Items in need include: Non-perishable food items, new or used clothes, shoes, socks, and all other clothing articles for women, men, and children (ICM always runs out of children’s and men’s clothing and shoes), small household items such as dishes, pots, and linens, toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, body wash, laundry detergent, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes), and baby items.

On behalf of the 165 families that received assistance, thank you to Linda Hinojosa, Michelle Purcell, Patti Cruse, Natalie Kanter, Joni Beals, Rebecca Brittain, Shannon Vance, and Mary Blanchard for extending a helping hand towards those in a time of hardship.

Thursday, June 9th, 2016 – NEWH/Arizona toured the new Harkins Camelview Theater at Scottsdale Fashion Square designed by Bar Napkin Productions. The new Camelview 14 pays homage to the original Camelview 5 theater that was built in 1973. Jeffrey Rausch from BNP provided insight to how this was achieved with the recreation of the mushroom lights and the use of original memorabilia throughout the cinema. The theater’s atmosphere has film fans speculating whether or not they are part of the production team and behind the scenes. The walking tour encouraged attendees to be observant and appreciate the movie trivia incorporated into the design. Moviegoers who appreciate independent and foreign films as well as those who want to see the latest and greatest will surely be comfortable in the custom designed recliners that are extremely comfy! The Verite Lounge is the perfect place to debate film details and admire the new Harkins Camelview Theater’s creative and inspiring interior design.

May 4th, 2016 – The Arizona and Las Vegas chapters collaborated to host a joint happy hour at the theatrical SAKE ROK during the HD Expo 2016. Our generous sponsors include: OW Lee, DezMotif Studios, Eaton Fine Art, Universal Furniture Design, Pental Surfaces, Chelsom Lighting, Peterman Lumber, and KML Designer Finishes.

April 20, 2016 – NEWH/Arizona’s first FUNdraiser of the year, Wine & Dine Under The Stars, was held at Pinnacle Design’s Rooftop Terrace. Five of the Valley’s most promising culinary students collaborated with a Professional Valley Chef to create an appetizer or dessert to be paired with wine. Student members included Angel Cruz from the Art Institute of Phoenix, Antonio Padilla from the Arizona Culinary Institute, Kandy Hall from the Art Institute of Phoenix, Natasha Wiener and Rebecca Mellen from Scottsdale Community College Culinary Arts, and Sylvia Martin from the Art Institute of Phoenix. The judges included Kristin Wolfe from daisycake.com/KriskaDECOR and Allison DeVane, founder of TEASPRESSA and featured on ABC’s “Shark Tank”. The best dish and wine pairing was voted on by attendees and the judges agreed, awarding a $1,500 Culinary Scholarship to Antonio Padilla who created a Beef Tartare with Deviled Quail Egg paired with Cabernet.

The Arizona Chapter also celebrated its 20th Anniversary. Markie Rhoads, the Founding President of the Arizona Chapter, recognized past Board of Directors including 8 former Board Presidents. A collection of photos from the May 1995 Chartering Party at Lake Pleasant brought back memories! Mary Blanchard, Arizona Chapter President, recognized Diane Berg, with Hill & Associates, for her dedicated service and leadership contributions to the NEWH Arizona Chapter by awarding her the Joyce Johnson Award. Diane Berg dutifully served on the board as Vice President through to Executive Advisor, but then chose to serve another year as Membership Director, in part, to continue to provide guidance to the relatively new NEWH 2015 Board Members. Everyone’s hard work has made it possible for NEWH/Arizona to award over $107,000 in scholarships over the past 20 years! Markie Rhoads also announced the recipients of scholarships for 2016: Sylvia Martin from the Art Institute of Phoenix was awarded a $1,500 scholarship while Juan Aguilar from Scottsdale Community College was awarded the Markie Rhoads Scholarship worth $2,000.
