October 20, 2023 – NEWH Dallas Fundraiser and Scholarship Dinner 2023: NEWH Airlines. The Frontiers of Flight Museum in West Dallas was filled with revelers from across the hospitality spectrum last Friday night, October 20 for the Fundraiser and Scholarship Dinner hosted by NEWH Dallas.

Last year, a star-studded blowout at the Nasher Sculpture Center raised over $75,000. Fundraising Director Micaela Sheffield, Fundraising Chair Angelle Bevier, and VP of Development Luis Araujo soared beyond expectation with this year’s First-Class experience.

Founded in 1991, the Dallas chapter of NEWH, the international network connecting the community of hospitality and design professionals, has awarded over $1 million in total scholarships benefiting students in creative and hospitality fields. The annual event is the primary fundraising vehicle for scholarships.

The 2023 gala raised more than $68,000 to benefit student scholarships and propel tomorrow’s hospitality leaders into careers in this dynamic industry. Dallas’ hospitality industry jetsetters dazzled in their designer wear and sipped cocktails, danced, and celebrated together under vintage and antique aircraft.

NEWH Fundraising Ambassadors Abbe Fenimore, Tyler Duncan and Jim Looney were recognized for their additional fundraising efforts. The year’s Top Interior Design Firms – LEO A DALY Dallas, Gensler Dallas and MatchLine Design Group – received awards as well.

Taking the five-star festivities to new heights were the generous sponsors: Smith Brown (diamond sponsor); Crypton with Paravars, Herzog Hospitality, and Fairmont Designs with Wabi Sabi Hospitality (platinum sponsors); Hill & Associates, Furniture Atelier, Outpost Hospitality, Kaiser Hospitality, Akula Living and Lusive Décor with Arnett-Whitacre & Associates (gold sponsors); Daltile (bar sponsor); and Chopin Vodka (drink sponsor). Their support of the industry and current students is sincerely appreciated and paves the runway for the future of hospitality to take flight.  click here to view entire album

December 10, 2020 – In the winter of 2020, professionals in the hospitality industry came together to collect over 4,000 non-perishable items benefitting the Dallas community. “We delivered 3,500 lbs of food. That is our largest one-day collection in the history of the RFT [Reverse Food Truck].” said Ellen Mata, NorthPark Presbyterian. This socially distanced drive-by event raised awareness for the scholarship fund allowing people to donate directly on the Dallas NEWH website. We celebrated past scholarship recipients on the red carpet by interviewing Alex Knodel, Mike Ford, Jennifer Landeros, and Christy Thompson about their experience. The Dallas NEWH Chapter would like to give LEO A DALY special recognition for donating 789 food items and our runner up, Studio 11 Design for donating 747 food items. A special thank you to Reverse Food Truck and NorthPark Presbyterian Church for collecting and transporting all non-perishable items.

April 26, 2016 – “THE TOUR” of the Westin Dallas Downtown Hotel began with a cocktail hour on the 32nd Floor of the hotel; just in time to watch the sunset across Dallas.  Lawrence Adams, a Principal at ForrestPerkins, introduced the project with a timeline from acquisition to grand opening that included design, purchasing, construction and a village.  Really, it only took 14 months for a semi-abandoned office building to become a hotel?!  His insight was followed up with a tour of the property lead by designers Amanda Jackson, Courtney Callahan and Veronica Sandoval.  Attendees were granted access to the 32nd Floor Pool, Ballrooms, Guestrooms, Pavilion and even 3,000 SF Presidential ‘two-story’ Suite.  The transformation on a property of this size with its timeline is truly astounding.

This event was fortunate enough to gain support from 8 sponsors that all had vital roles in the realization of this hotel.  Our sincerest gratitude goes to:

Couristan: Public Area Carpet & Rugs
Kimball Hospitality: Guestroom Casegoods
MDC: Guestroom & Public Area Wallcovering
PI Fine Art: Guestroom Artwork & Non-Lit Mirrors
PBH Hospitality: Guestroom Lighting
Shaw Hospitality Group: Guestroom & Corridor Carpet
Shawn Austin: Public Area Structures & Casegoods
Spike Lighting: Public Area Large-Scaled Lighting

Despite the “THE TOUR” having to be postponed due to inclement weather, it remained a success.  Thank you to all who attended and apologies for anyone we missed on the second go around.  Be sure to keep an eye out for information on the next tour / CEU combination coming in June.

March 22, 2016 – We had an incredible 2016 Membership Drive at Top Golf. On Tuesday, March 22nd over 150 people joined to fill 25 golf bays. A fajita buffet was served during the 2 hour golfing event. The Dallas NEWH chapter registered 23 new members and are anticipated additional member sign up this month! Best Costume was awarded to Flick Mars sponsored by Diane Hachtman/Fabric Innovations for “Golf de Mexico”. Highest Score was awarded to Chap Smith of KSM Design Source. We want to thank everyone who sponsored a bay and for coming out to support our growing Dallas Chapter!

February 20, 2016 – What an amazing turn out for the Form Follows Fitness 5K, put on by Dallas Center for Architecture.  The race itself was sold out and over 40 people signed up to be on the NEWH Dallas team! I doubt any of us had seen Klyde Warren Park so packed.  The moderate weather this winter made it ideal to get our exercise on.  Our team shirts, created by Hellen Hale, were the best by far and really made us stand out amongst the other participants. We followed up the race with tacos and margaritas at La Ventana, a block from the park.  Mm mm mm, delicioso!  Thank you to all who joined us and showed their NEWH support for the Dallas A&D community.

Shout out’s to:
Debbie McKelvey and Louise Ross for holding down our meeting spot during the race.
Tara Samuelson, a new NEWH Student Member, for creating the fantastic speech bubble signs
Angelle Nguyen for giving her time to photograph the event!
And a HUGE Thank you to our 2016 Platinum Programming Sponsors for providing the refreshments and t-shirts!

January 26, 2016 – “The Toast” at Happiest Hour was a huge success with delicious food, wonderful conversation and a beautiful view on the largest patio in Dallas.  A couple of the designers from Harwood, Alexandra Milkovich and Kelli Rice, described the inspiration for the 3 month old restaurant near the American Airlines Center. We were pleasantly surprised to hear about the full turn-key design service from the exterior & interior design of the building all the way to detailing the place settings and wait staff uniforms.  In addition, the designers mentioned a bit of what to look for in of future developments in the Harwood District.

A tremendous thank you to our Platinum Programming Sponsors of 2016: Alison & Co, Bernhardt Hospitality, Crossley Axminster, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Norton Enterprises and Urban Concepts.  What a terrific location to start off ‘HAPPY’ this 2016 NEWH Dallas calendar year.   Catch us at our next event, a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, February 20th, at Klyde Warren Park.

December 15, 2015 – The Dallas chapter capped off an amazing year with their Holiday Tour at the Hilton Granite Towers in Plano. The inspiring and informational tour was lead by Dennis Gulseth, Jeremy Sharp, Michelle Vandermeulen and Amanda Himes with BOKA Powell, the Lead Architect and Interior Design Firm for the project. The tour guides shared the story behind the design while walking through the public areas and guest rooms, answering any and all questions along the way. Our members and guests were treated to a fireside reception of cocktails, dim sum, and conversation before and after their tour. The response to our annual toy drive for Toys for Tots was overwhelmingly generous. We all had a wonderful time learning about a very successful local project.  Thanks to BOKA Powell for their smart design, and to all of our members and guests who came out to celebrate it with us.

October 16, 2015 – The Dallas chapter has once again surpassed last year’s scholarship totals! During our first ever combined Scholarship Dinner/ Life of Design Fundraiser event at Em The Venue, we were thrilled to present $34,000 in Scholarships to local deserving students. Included with these awards was the first ever Turner Duncan “Live with Passion” scholarship presented by Kimberly Miller of DESIGN Duncan Miller Ullman and Tyler Duncan of Duncan Design Group. We were honored to hear the stories of two of our recipients, Ashley Shipman and Teresa Gray. These two lovely ladies moved our crowd speechless as they shared how this NEWH scholarship has changed their life.

Following the dinner and awards was the Life of Design fundraiser where design firms were paired with vendor sponsors to form 19 teams along with some student entries in this friendly competition. They created unique and functioning works of art for a silent auction. Our Design Team winners were HKS/Troy Lighting, Waldrop Nichols/Blue Leaf, and Flick Mars/ Gracie Wallcovering. Altogether 300 people from the hospitality design industry came together to raise more scholarship funds than ever before for NEWH Dallas hospitality students.

We’d like to say thank you again to our Platinum sponsor Smith Brown. In addition, we’d like to thank our Silver sponsors, Hill Associates and JLF Collections, and all of our design team and event sponsors for a great evening of fun and fundraising! click here to see all photos in Flickr

September 22, 2015 – “The Tour” @ Crush Craft, Dallas. Dallas members got to try out a new Thai restaurant, Crush Craft designed by local design firm, Jones Baker. Guest speaker, William Baker of Jones Baker, walked us through the design process and creative inspiration of this colorful restaurant while we sampled the flavors of Thai cuisine. We were all impressed by William’s ability to source unique finishes such as using authentic Thai boxes and rice bags as wall covering, mid-century baking trays as light fixtures and local bamboo for a ceiling treatment.

August 25th, 2015 – Life Of Design- Kickoff Party Recap – It’s the beginning of a new type of “kick off season” down in Dallas! The NEWH Dallas chapter has officially kicked off our annual Life of Design fundraiser.  On August 25th, 19 of the Dallas area’s top design firms were teamed up with local manufacturers to begin the creative, and now highly competitive process of designing a one of a kind piece to be put on display and auctioned off for our biggest fundraising event of the year. The teams, just like years past, were also given their design element to kick start the creative process. The design elements were either a coffee table, 2 side tables, or the piece that started it all, a chair- all from IKEA.  The teams have 7 weeks to create their design for the official unveiling at the combined Scholarship Awards dinner/ Life of Design event being held October 16th 2015 at Marc Events down in the Dallas Design district.

June 23rd, 2015 – “The Toast” @ Social House, Dallas. The return of the Toast was a big success! The NEWH Dallas membership and their guests braved the summer heat and came out to Social House to catch up over cocktails and appetizers.  This “Toast” also served as a platform to announce our NEWH Dallas From the Heart project with Dwell with Dignity. Dwell with Dignity is a local nonprofit charity that works to provide beautiful environments for families that do not have a place to call home.  Our From the Heart chair, Colletta Conner (Forrest Perkins), is looking for volunteers to help with this year’s project, installation will be in September.

April 28th, 2015 – “The Taste” @ Savor, Dallas. This sold out “tasting” event gave our members and guests the opportunity to mix at Savor Gastropub in the heart of Downtown Dallas’ Klyde Warren Park.  The beautiful setting was elevated with delicious food, beverages and perfect late spring patio weather.

April 22nd, 2015 – “Next & Now” Student Night @ Knoll Showroom, Dallas. The 2015 Next & Now student night began with a fascinating panel featuring twelve of our industry’s leading local designers. These mavens of hospitality design spoke on topics that ranged from their biggest fear as a new designer to how to capture the attention of a potential employer. The student audience then broke for a fun dinner followed by a brief presentation on interview and portfolio tips. Finally, the event concluded with multiple rounds of mock-interviews and portfolio reviews and we cannot thank our local design professionals enough for giving their time and expertise to these future designers!

Special Thank you to Knoll Dallas for the beautiful backdrop and to our panel of industry mavens Michelle Bushey (SJL Design), Paige Byrd (Thiel & Thiel), James Flick (Flick Mars), Gina Joyce (joyceDESIGNgroup), Katie Kaeshoefer (Waldrop + Nichols), James Looney (Looney & Associates), Patricia Miller (Leo A Daly),  Sarah Pickard (Pickard Design Studio), Vanessa Redman (Paul Duesing Partners), Kellie Sirna (Studio 11 Design)  Joan Sizemore (Wilson Associates), and Leslie Hughes Wyman (MatchLine Design Group).

March 24th, 2015 – “Rodeo Drive” Membership Drive @ TopGolf, Dallas. After many years in the bowling alley NEWH Dallas took its annual membership event outdoors to the driving range! Hosted at TopGolf in Dallas, the 2015 Rodeo Drive membership event was a huge success. Planned by membership chairs, Ellen Tichenor (Flick Mars) and Lindsay Schardt (joyceDESIGNgroup) the event featured over twenty teams of golfers. Many of our teams got in on the fun by dressing up in costume and coming up with a clever team name. Each team was housed in their own driving bay and enjoyed food and drink throughout the evening. Most importantly, the event brought in 22 brand new members to our ever growing Dallas Chapter!   Big, Big kudos to the NEWH Dallas Membership team for a successful evening.

March 3rd, 2015 – “The Toast” @ Social House, Dallas. Named The Toast, this will be one of three different types of programming events that we’ll host this year called either The Toast, The Taste or The Tour. At each “Toast” we will be raising a glass to our members’ achievements both personally and professionally. Thanks to some not so beautiful weather this February kickoff “Toast” was pushed to March third at Social House in Uptown Dallas. Even though the weather was chilly our membership came out in force and our programming chairs, Heather Scott (MDC) and Veronica Sandoval (Forrest Perkins), had no shortage of beautiful news to share and toast to! New promotions and growing families seemed to be the trend to toast at this soiree.
