NEWH was founded in 1984 in Los Angeles as The Network of Executive Women in Hospitality, Inc.
At the time, Los Angeles was a centre for hospitality design, procurement, and manufacturing. A group of professionals working across interior design, FF&E procurement, manufacturing, and distribution saw a shared challenge. While women were contributing meaningfully to the industry, access to mentorship, professional networks, and advancement opportunities was limited.
NEWH began as a response to that reality. Its founding principle was simple and practical. Those with established careers could support and share knowledge with those entering the field.
The first NEWH meeting took place in November 1984, bringing together professionals committed to connection, learning, and mutual support. From the start, NEWH was built on action, not optics.
As interest grew, NEWH expanded beyond Los Angeles.
New chapters formed across the United States, followed by international expansion into Canada and Europe. Chapters developed their own regional character while operating within a shared framework. This balance allowed NEWH to grow without losing cohesion.
As the network expanded, so did its focus. What began as professional networking grew to include scholarships, education, industry events, and leadership development. NEWH became known not just for connection, but for creating tangible opportunities for students and professionals alike.
Today, NEWH is a global nonprofit organization with chapters and regional groups across multiple countries.
The network brings together students, emerging professionals, established leaders, and industry partners working across hospitality, design, construction, procurement, manufacturing, and related fields. Membership reflects the full ecosystem that supports the built hospitality environment.
NEWH continues to invest in education through scholarships, deliver learning through events and programs, and support leadership development through hands-on volunteer roles. While the organization has evolved, its focus remains practical and outcome-led.
As NEWH expanded, its structure evolved to support scale and consistency.
NEWH Inc. was established as the governing body of the organization, providing oversight, shared standards, and strategic direction. Local chapters and regional groups are volunteer-led and supported by headquarters staff, ensuring both accountability and autonomy.
This structure allows NEWH to operate globally while remaining responsive to regional needs.
