Natural Beauty: Design with Biophilic Principles to Promote Occupant Well-Being

AEC Daily - IDCEC Course #AEC1466: Credit 0.1 HSW

One of the most important concepts behind biophilia is the “urge to affiliate with other forms of life” (E.O. Wilson). Humans are connected to nature, inspired by nature, and desire to be harmonized with nature. This course discusses the main principles of biophilic design and explains how a connection with nature benefits human well-being, increases classroom performance, and reduces stress. Multiple case studies demonstrating the positive benefits of daylight and views on building occupants are discussed, and applications of biophilic design are examined. Residential, Health Care, Govt. Instiutional, Facilities Management, Office/Corporate, Hospitality/Entertainment, Retail/Store Planning - recall the principles and history of biophilic design and its human well-being and performance - examine, through case studies, the importance of integrating natural light and views of nature into building design to reduce occupant stress - analyze the positive health and performance impacts of biophilic design strategies in the classroom and hospitality environments, and - identify how biophilia is assessed in building standards including LEED, Living Building Challenge, and WELL Building Standard V2, and discuss how biophilia is incorporated into building design.
