He also served as director of corporate business development, managing a national sales team focused on the development of IHG’s corporate mid-market key accounts.

Jennifer earned her Master of Science from Pratt Institute and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Arizona. With a strong foundation in strategy and concept development, David has collaborated with globally recognized hospitality leaders including Marriott International, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Virgin Group, and InterContinental Hotels Group. He played an instrumental role in the early strategy and development of the Long-Term Differentiation initiative, helping to define a forward-looking food and beverage vision for premium brands and develop innovative concepts for premium hotel experiences.

As Chief Operating Officer, Julia Choi oversees all of JBI’s business operations and strategy implementation. Julia has over 20 years of experience in the A&D industry, working with world renowned architects such as Peter Eisenman and Diller, Scofidio & Renfro before moving into the hospitality field with industry giants such as Rockwell Group, having previously served as Managing Director of Roman & Williams, and Director of Operations at Wilson Associates overseeing multiple offices. Julia studied architecture at the prestigious The Cooper Union and holds a Bachelors of Architecture degree.

On her rare days off, Julia flies single engine planes to see the world from a different perspective.

Marisa Christenson

Marisa Christenson is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, NY with a focus and degree in Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management. After graduating from The Culinary Institute of America, Marisa was accepted into the Fellowship program, where she further honed her expertise in Hospitality Management.

Christenson is currently Associate Vice President of Food and Beverage Operations and Development for Holland America Line & Seabourn, leading the dining and beverage shoreside and fleet teams in development of new initiatives, programs, and guest experience enhancements. Her oversight is specific to the overall guest experience in all onboard dining and beverage outlets.

She previously spent 10 years with Nordstrom Restaurant Division, working in various markets as a regional restaurant manager, most recently the New York City flagship that opened in 2019.

• Level 1 Sommelier certification as well as being an assistant manager earlier in her career, opening the Gordon Ramsay Restaurant at the London Hotel in West Hollywood.

Sarah Churchill joined 10 Design (formerly 10SB / SB Architects) in June 2025 as Director of Business Development, responsible for leading strategic growth initiatives focused on the Western and Central U.S. Regions. Operating from Denver and reporting to the San Francisco office, Sarah collaborates closely with leadership and travels frequently to deepen client relationships and broaden 10 Design’s footprint across hospitality, mixed-use, and other commercial sectors.

Sarah brings over a decade of experience in the hospitality industry, with deep expertise in CapEx planning, project strategy, and FF&E procurement. Before joining 10 Design, she led the Business Development team at Benjamin West, the world’s leading hospitality procurement firm, where she advised owners, asset managers, and project teams across the U.S. on setting critical budget and schedule benchmarks for millions of dollars of CapEx investments.

Earlier in her career, Sarah held project management roles, where she managed over $100 million in FF&E purchasing for 4- and 5-star luxury hotel and resort properties. She progressed from Project Coordinator to Senior Project Manager, leading high-profile hospitality projects from concept through completion.

Her insights have been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Hotel Investment Today, and Hotel News Now/CoStar, and she is a regular speaker at events including the HUNTER Hotel Investment Conference, HD Expo, and ULI Hotel Development Council. She has also served as a guest lecturer at Boston University’s School of Hospitality Administration.

Sarah is an Associate Member of the International Society of Hospitality Consultants (ISHC) and the 2023 recipient of the ISHC Lori Raleigh Award for Emerging Excellence in Hospitality Consulting. She is also a long-standing member of the NEWH Rocky Mountain Chapter, where she previously served as Chapter President.

Valerie Coleman

Valerie Coleman is a Director of Design with Marriott International, where she oversees the interior design team for Marriott’s Select Brands. Her career spans interior design firms, a general contractor, and an earlier role in Human Resources, giving her a well-rounded perspective on design and project delivery.

Valerie has been deeply engaged with NEWH throughout her career—first as a scholarship recipient, then as President of the Washington, DC Metro Chapter, and most recently as Vice President of Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity on NEWH Inc.’s Executive Committee. She also serves on the Interior Design Advisory Council at Montgomery College, where she has taught as an adjunct professor, and actively mentors design students through partnerships with local universities.

In 2005, Stephanie joined Architex Textiles in the Pacific Northwest, where she rapidly transformed the region into one of the company’s top-performing territories. Renowned as the Textile Maven, she became a recognized authority in performance textiles. In 2021, her role expanded to Managing Director of Strategic Accounts, where she leads the development of strategic partnerships and preferred vendor programs with national and global brands.

Stephanie’s commitment to advancing the profession is reflected in her extensive leadership and advocacy work. She has held prominent leadership roles with IIDA and NEWH, earning four leadership awards in recognition of her contributions. A pioneer in industry engagement, she conceived the first-ever fashion show for interior products and finishes at the inaugural Interior Design Boston trade show in 1998—an idea that reshaped trade events nationwide and remains a standard feature today.

A dedicated advocate for professional standards, Stephanie served for over a decade as a CIDA site visitor, supporting excellence in interior design education. She is the Past President of the Interior Design Coalition of Washington, where she led efforts to advance interior design legislation in Washington State. Leigh will be responsible for the design effort and coordinating the design with outside consultants. Katie Sander Smith is an Associate and Interior Designer at Cuningham where she specializes in hospitality environments, blending creative vision with a commitment to healthy, sustainable material strategies. An advocate for regenerative design, she champions the use of healthy materials and high-performing systems to create resilient, environmentally responsible spaces. Katie is deeply engaged in advancing the hospitality industry through her leadership with the Network of Executive Women in Hospitality (NEWH), where she currently serves as Executive Advisor for the organization’s Los Angeles Founding Chapter and serves as TopID Chair on the International Board of Directors.

After spending his early career with hospitality design firms in Los Angeles, Barry joined Hilton in 2015 with the launch of Hilton’s first Lifestyle brand, Canopy. Since then, he has participated in the development and launch of Motto in 2018 and Tempo in 2020 and now oversees design for Outset, Hilton’s newest collection brand. The team works with owners, developers, and design consultants to align projects to their intended lifestyle position within Hilton’s family of brands.

Lauren Uthenwoldt

With more than 30 years of experience spanning food service, hospitality, and hotel operations, Lauren Uthenwoldt has built a career defined by determination, adaptability, and a deep passion for the guest experience.

Lauren’s journey in hospitality began as a teenager, working as a line cook and discovering her love for the fast-paced, high energy environment of the kitchen. Inspired to grow her craft, she went on to attend culinary school and earn her degree from Southern New Hampshire University. Soon after graduation, she joined Marriott as an Assistant Sous Chef, quickly setting a goal of becoming Executive Chef.

Her drive and commitment propelled her through the kitchen brigade, and she ultimately achieved Executive Chef status at several of Marriott’s historic and more complex hotel operations. After mastering the back of the house, Lauren set her sights on new challenges and transitioned to the front of the house as Director of Restaurants at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel.

Eager to broaden her operational impact, she made a pivotal career shift—moving out of food and beverage entirely to become Front Office Manager. She refined her leadership and operational strategy skills during one of the most difficult eras in hospitality, guiding frontline teams through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID 19 pandemic.

For the past four years, Lauren has served as Director of Operations, and she currently leads hotel operations at the Washington Marriott at Metro Center. In this role, she oversees daily performance, elevates service culture, and develops teams across multiple disciplines to deliver exceptional guest experiences.
Lauren’s career reflects the full spectrum of hospitality leadership—from the heat of the kitchen to the complexity of hotel operations. Her story is one of resilience, continuous growth, and an unwavering commitment to the people who make hospitality happen.

Jeanne Varney

Senior Lecturer, Director of the Center for Real Estate and Finance

Jeanne Varney serves as the Arthur Adler ’78 & Karen Adler ’78 Director of the Center for Real Estate and Finance and is a Senior Lecturer at The Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration (Nolan), in the SC Johnson College of Business (College) at Cornell University. She resides in the Properties Development and Management department where she is responsible for the curriculum in Fundamentals of Hotel Development and Management, Hospitality Asset Management, Sustainable Development and Introduction to Sustainable Tourism. Jeanne has been a member of NEWH for 30 years and held many roles including participating in Martha’s Mentors as a Mentor, and International Past President for NEWH, Inc. Jeanne has chaired/co-chaired multiple industry Roundtables, chaired Nolan and College internal committees and advises many students, clubs, and student competitions. She is also a current member of the HAMA (Hospitality Asset Manager’s Association) and serves on the Education Committee. Jeanne holds an MBA from The George Washington University and a BS degree in Hotel Administration from Cornell University.

Joemy Vega is the Founder of DV Studio and an interior designer specializing in restaurant and food & beverage environments. With over 20 years of experience exclusively in hospitality design, she has worked with brands including Hard Rock (where she began her career), Marriott, Wyndham, the New York Yankees, and Ruth’s Chris Steak House, as well as boutique restaurants and hotels across the UAE, South America, and the Caribbean.

Her work focuses on the strategic connection between interior design and restaurant performance—examining how space, workflow, and brand positioning impact operations, culture, and long-term growth. Joemy is actively integrating AI into her design practice and exploring how it can streamline decision-making, improve efficiency, and help hospitality professionals work smarter. Her current projects leverage AI-driven tools to solve real operational challenges in the industry.

Tara currently leads a full-scale digital marketing team spanning strategy, brand, design, content, web development, analytics, and performance marketing. Her work is grounded in building data-driven, cohesive systems that connect leadership vision to execution, ensuring marketing functions as a strategic business driver rather than a support function.

With a professional background rooted in manufacturing, hospitality, and professional services, Tara brings a pragmatic, data-informed approach to brand development and audience engagement. Meridith Zimmerman

Meridith Zimmerman is the Vice President of Design with RLJ Lodging Trust, a 94-asset, hotel investment company that owns premium-branded, rooms-oriented, high-margin, focused-service and compact full-service hotels located in Bethesda, Maryland. Meridith holds the responsibility of overseeing and assisting with annual capital project budgets, due diligence processes, renovation and conversion project execution, and contract compliance. She also serves as the Owner’s Rep in Brand Compliance issues, and Design and Construction approvals. In her 19+ years with RLJ she has effectively raised the firm’s reputation for quality lodging by introducing strategies, technology, and the latest industry standards to the forefront of Executive Committee discussions and decisions.

Prior to joining RLJ, Meridith was in the Architecture and Construction division of Marriott International, The Office of the Architect of the Capitol/Library of Congress in their interior development department, and at Charles E. Smith Realty in their facilities design management division. Meridith holds a BA in Interior Design from USC and a master’s in architecture from Catholic University in Washington, DC.
