Area Rugs

Area Rug
An area rug is a piece of fabric used as a floor covering that covers only a specific part of a floor, rather than extending from wall to wall. Unlike wall-to-wall carpeting, which is permanently affixed, area rugs are portable and can be easily moved or replaced.

Key Characteristics and Uses

  • Size and Placement: Area rugs come in various sizes (commonly 5'x8', 8'x11', 9'x12', etc.) and are used to define specific zones within a larger room or open-concept layout. They are often placed under furniture groupings, such as a seating area or dining table, to anchor the space and tie the room's decor together.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: They add warmth, comfort, texture, color, and pattern to a room, effectively serving as "artwork for the floor".
  • Functionality: In addition to their decorative role, area rugs help to reduce noise, provide a softer surface underfoot, and protect the underlying hard flooring (such as hardwood or tile) from scratches and daily wear.
  • Versatility: They are available in a wide array of shapes (rectangular, round, organic), materials (wool, cotton, synthetic fibers like polypropylene), and styles, making them a flexible design choice for various rooms in a home.
