Abrasion Terms

MartindaleMinimum Cycle Standard 25,000 - 30,000 per ACT(Association of Contract Textiles) standards for high traffic upholstery use.

The Martindale test uses a machine with wood duck fabric as the abrasion material that oscillates in a figure 8 across the test fabric. Each pass equals “one unit”. The test is run until there is noticeable wear in the area being rubbed or until two yarns break. This is an international test; not commonly used in the US but making a stronger presence.

Wyzenbeek Wyzenbeek 30,000 double rub minimum per ACT(Association of Contract Textiles) standards for high traffic upholstery use.

The Wyzenbeek test uses a machine with cotton duck fabric as the abrasion material and rubs it back and forth across the test fabric. Each pass back and forth is called a “double rub”. They test is run until there is noticeable wear in the area being rubbed or until two yarns break. This test is most commonly used/referred to in the United States.
