July 27, 2023 – NEWH Arizona Hotel Tour of The Clyde Hotel – What a great evening, honoring Carla Davis with Accentricks, Inc and Heritage Hotels newly renovated public spaces at the Clyde in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico. We toured 1922 bar and lounge, the lobby open seating area and Carrie’s Restaurant. Seeing the transformation and hearing the process, enjoyed by all. April 12, 2023 – NEWH Arizona 2023 Wine & Dine Under the Stars culinary competition was held under the twinkling lights of Atmosphere Commercial Interiors’ outdoor patio. Guests enjoyed appetizers and wine pairings created by 4 local culinary students competing for a $2,000 scholarship award.
The competition was tight, with the winning appetizer & wine pairing of Crispy Thai Shrimp Bite in Wonton Cup with Peanut Lime Dressing paired with Winzer Krems Gruner Veltliner created by Angelica Ambriz from Arizona Culinary Institute.
We can’t wait for next year’s competition where we plan to “mix things up a bit”!
June 16, 2022 – The NEWH/Arizona chapter held a tour at the Biltmore, an award winning best bar at Honors 2021. PHX shared the transformation of the outdoor amenity into this beautiful outdoor bar oasis. The canopy at the Spire Bar is a re-imagination of Frank Lloyd Wright’s original design for the Arizona State Capitol building circa 1957. There was even an obelisk like structure within, hence the adjacent art spire, designed by Rob de Oude. Erik Peterson, using his own creative interpretation, designed the canopy of the Spire Bar to evoke this spirit, but by no means duplicate it. The centerpiece, “the Flower”, was designed by Virserius Studio to juxtapose a soft curve against the orthogonal structure for a focal point.
May 18, 2022 – The NEWH/Arizona Chapter hosted a tour at Mochilero Kitchen – An award winning best stand alone restaurant at Honors 2021 by Katz Design Group Beth Katz. Jorge Cota shared his culinary travels to Mexico and the group got to experience his talents from his travels.
April 21, 2022 – Arizona’s April showers always bring events that empower! This past April, the NEWH Arizona Chapter hosted their annual Wine and Dine Under the Stars event to support culinary students competing for scholarships. The magical evening took place at The East Courtyard at The Reference Library in Phoenix, Arizona. Industry leaders and peers gathered to partake in networking activities and voting for their favorite tasty bites. Culinary arts school’s students and chefs were the highlight of the night. Their interaction, dedication, and passion were the secret ingredients in making this event a true success. We applaud the below sponsors for their contribution and kindness.
January 1, 2022 – The NEWH/Arizona Chapter hosted their annual Supper Club, an event to celebrate local restaurants and design, on January 26th. They enjoyed a three course meal at Chantico Mexican Food Restaurant in Phoenix. Chantico’s general manager spoke to the group about his journey in the local restaurant industry as well as the interior design of the space, which combines native desert flora with modern architecture. The event was hosted on their beautiful outdoor private patio and the chapter enjoyed learning about the local industry as well as getting to know new members.

Saturday, July 13, 2019 – NEWH/Arizona annual Community Service took place at St. Mary’s Food Bank in Phoenix, Arizona. NEWH Board members and members alike took part in this amazing experience giving back to the community. In the end, NEWH Arizona and volunteers assembled 21 pallets that were used to pack 1,512 boxes, translating into 1,512 families that would be fed!
April 11, 2019 – NEWH/Arizona’s annual Fundraiser, Wine & Dine Under the Stars, was held at Pinnacle Design’s Rooftop Terrance in Phoenix, Arizona. Five talented students competed in four teams to create an original bite-sized appetizer to be paired with a complementing wine. The best dish and wine pairing was voted on by attendees and Jay Zhou with Arizona Culinary Institute was honored with a $1,500.00 Culinary Award for his Ume Wagyu Tartare paired with a Tavel Rose. The award was presented by Culinary Award Sponsor, Valley Forge Fabrics!
March 7, 2018 – NEWH/Arizona held a Happy Hour at The Vig – which was voted NEWH AZ Honors 2018 Best Restaurant.
February 21, 2019 – The Arizona Chapter of NEWH toured the AC Hotel Phoenix Biltmore in Phoenix, AZ. RSP designed this new five-story 160-key AC Marriott Biltmore Hotel as part of the Camelback Collective project, an urban infill development located on 3.6 acres in the heart of the Camelback Corridor. Joe Ellis, RSP, began the tour by sharing the development of the project and history of the site. Erin Yi, RSP, led the tour with the interior design approach highlighting unique characteristics of the AC Marriott Hotel brand in public space and guestrooms. Attendees experienced the social ground floor and gained insight into how it was purposefully designed as an urban desert contemporary interpretation of the brand. The approach to the interior design of the property seamlessly integrated the brand’s values of harmonious, discerning, and modern with the local context of Camelback Corridor. The tour ended with a sponsored happy hour thanks to Slab Haus, Knoll, Janus et Cie, Arizona Lighting Sales, and Andreu World.
December 6, 2018 – NEWH/Arizona’s annual Christmas for the Troops was held at the NEWH Honors 2018 Best Restaurant Bar, Farm + Craft Uptown Phoenix, designed by Hayes Architecture/Interiors. November 8, 2018 – The NEWH Arizona Chapter had its second annual NEWH Honors Award Ceremony at Pitchforks & Corks in Tempe, AZ. The evening began by presenting $2,500 scholarships to two students: Shelbie Pinkelman, Hotel and Restaurant Management student from Northern Arizona University (NAU), and Claire Batalona, Interior Design student from Arizona State University (ASU). NEWH 2018 TopID awards were presented to 3rd Story, Bar Napkin Productions, and FFKR Architects. Awards were presented for: Best New Restaurant (The Vig McDowell Mountain), Best Outdoor Dining Space (The Churchill), Best Restaurant Bar (Farm & Craft), Best Newly Renovated/New Hotel (AC Marriott Tucson), Best New Spa (Civana), Best Multi-Family Public Space (The Curve at Melrose), Best Hospitality Public Space (Arizona Cardinals State Farm Stadium, Club Level), Best Entertainment Venue (CB Live)Best Senior Living (Club Sole at the Colonnade). Arizona Chapter President presented Past President, Mary Blanchard, with the prestigious NEWH Joyce Johnson Award for her dedication to NEWH and the Arizona Chapter. October 16, 2018 – NEWH/Arizona hosted its second annual Supper Club at the 2017 NEWH Honors Best New Restaurant, Fat Ox, on Tuesday, October 16, 2018. This exclusive event is all about celebrating local restaurants and the creative teams behind the design. Fat Ox is a Chef-driven restaurant located in Scottsdale, AZ. Chef Matt Carter crafted a five course meal for attendees and shared inspiration behind the modern Italian menu.
July 19, 2018 – NEWH/Arizona had a Summer Sundowner at Mora Italian in Phoenix, AZ. This venue won NEWHonors 2017 Best Outdoor Dining Space. New and existing members packed the bar to network and nosh on appetizers!
May 23, 2018 – The IIDA Southwest Chapter and the local chapter of ASID collaborated in the name of advocacy and formed IDEAZ: Interior Design Empowerment in Arizona. IDEAZ seeks to advance the interior design profession and safeguard the interests of Interior Designers in Arizona. NEWH/Arizona was invited to attend the official launch of IDEAZ at the Daltile Showroom in Tempe, AZ!
May 3, 2018 – The Las Vegas and Arizona Chapter had a joint HD Sundowner at Interlude Casino Lounge at The Cromwell. We had over 150 members in attendance!
April 5, 2018 – NEWH/Arizona’s first FUNdraiser of the year, Wine & Dine Under The Stars, was held at The Reference Library’s Courtyard in Phoenix. Seven talented students competed in five teams to create an original bite-sized appetizer to be paired with a complementing wine. Student members included Diego Cardiel from the Arizona Culinary Institute, Miguel Valdez and Rusland Sanchez from the Arizona Culinary Institute, Paul Beatty from the Art Institute of Phoenix, Shae Wolff from EVIT Culinary Arts, and Sylvia Villasenor and Angel Rubio from the Scottsdale Community College Culinary Arts. The best dish and wine pairing was voted on by attendees and Shae Wolff was honored with a $1,500 Culinary Award for the infused chipotle chili on fry bread with shredded bison!

November 21, 2017 – NEWH/Arizona’s annual Christmas for the Troops was held at Andaz Scottsdale Hotel’s Warp and Weft Art Bar. Attendees were encouraged to wear their ugly Christmas sweaters and included a recent scholarship recipient, designers from TopID firms, reps and NEWH members. Two troops were adopted this year: Sergeant Major Thomas Flinn from the Marines who is stationed in Belize and Sergeant Sergio Tosi from the Army who is stationed in Afghanistan. Over $700.00 was raised and contributed towards gifts for our Troops thanks to everyone’s amazing contributions!
September 21, 2017 – NEWH/Arizona and TopID firm, Best Western Hotels & Resorts, hosted an exclusive student event at their head quarters in Phoenix, AZ. Students from five different programs and schools around the valley participated in this first annual event. We took a closer look at Best Western Design Studio and the unique assortment of brands Best Western offers. Also, how licensed designs collaborate with members on a variety of custom designs and pre-designed packages for new construction and complete renovations to fit each individual member’s region, scope, time line, and budget. Best Western educated students on the design process and positions within their studio that are available. After the informative presentation, participants were able to tour a completed model hotel room from Vīb – a stylish urban boutique hotel concept designed for today’s connected traveler.
September 14, 2017 – NEWH/Arizona toured Ultralights Lighting in Tucson, AZ. This local lighting factory provides high end light fixtures and lighting design consulting services. Attendees got a behind the scenes look at how fixtures are handcrafted to order for commercial, hospitality, and residential applications. Beers at Barrio Brewing followed the tour where students, designers, and manufacturers enjoyed networking.
August 24, 2017 – NEWH/Arizona held it’s first Sustainability CEU at the Sheraton Mesa Hotel. Attendees enjoyed appetizers and refreshments while networking. This CEU event was presented by Signature Carpet and attended by designers from Arizona’s Top ID firms.
July 22, 2017 – NEWH/Arizona summer community service event was held at UMOM New Day Center. It is the largest shelter for homeless families in Phoenix. Members and non-members donated kitchen supplies, household items, and women’s professional attire. Attendees assembled more than 30 Move-In Kits from the donations. Donated books were separated and organized by reading level for a weekly event held by UMOM called “Read To Me”; that allows volunteers to read one-on-one with children who then get to keep a book. UMOM’s Volunteer Coordinator, Robin Telle, provided a tour of the UMOM Campus where volunteers were able to see the “Dream Wall”; where children’s hopes and dreams are recorded.
June 29, 2017 – The Arizona Chapter’s first ever Supper Club was all about celebrating local restaurants and the creative teams behind the design. The event was presented in part by 3rd Story Architects and Interiors Designers at The Mission in Kierland Commons in Scottsdale, AZ. The Club enjoyed a four course meal accompanied by signature drinks at the newly opened restaurant. Anissa Mendil and Ben Meyer from 3rd Story discussed the concept of the design while the Chef discussed the inspiration of the menu. This event was such a hit, we can’t wait to sit down for dinner with our members again soon!
May 4, 2017 – The Las Vegas and Arizona Chapter had a joint HD Sundowner at Las Vegas’ Hidden Gem: 1923 Bourbon Bar – A Modern Speakeasy.
April 20, 2017 – The Arizona Chapter of NEWH toured the FOUND:RE Phoenix Hotel and enjoyed a Sundowner at it’s restaurant, Match Cuisine and Cocktails. The hotel features 105 guestrooms, muliple art galleries with rotating collections with tons of interactive elements, and a "wood-fire everything" restaurant that includes a Chef’s table. General Manager, Vittal Calamur, and Interior Designers from Studio 4 Design guided attendees in multiple groups through the Penthouse Suite, Guestrooms, Ballrooms, and Match Cuisine. Art and intriguing installations from locals were showcased throughout the property and created conversation over signature cocktails. We had a great turnout from designers and everyone was excited to revisit the FOUND:RE to discover something new.
March 16, 2017 – NEWH Arizona’s Wine & Dine Under the Stars 2017 – Our second annual Wine and Dine Under the Stars event was held at the Pinnacle Design Rooftop Terrace in Phoenix. The evening was gorgeous – live music, bartender, silent auction, and two amazing culinary teams!! We hosted about 110 attendees, and couldn’t do it without the support of our amazing sponsors! February 22, 2017 – Our membership drive was in held in five distinct areas to target students and professionals – Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Flagstaff, and Tucson. We wanted to offer multiple locations as a convenience for prospective members to meet board members and current members. We had a great turn-out across the state!
January 11, 2017 – NEWH Arizona mentored ASU Interior Design students enrolled in the Studio II: Hospitality course. Speakers from various aspects of the hospitality industry spoke on topics such as trends in the market, new and innovative products, and all of the benefits NEWH has to offer students in their journey into the hospitality field. From this event we enrolled 15 new student members!
December 6, 2016 – NEWH/Arizona celebrated their favorite philanthropic event of the year: Christmas for the Troops. The Arizona chapter sponsored soldiers currently serving overseas in the Arizona National Guard. Past and present NEWH members along with their families gathered at UEB Builders in Scottsdale, AZ dressed to impress in their best Christmas Sweaters. In total, 24 boxes of wrapped Christmas gifts were assembled with approximately $700 in cash donations being contributed by attendees and friends absent the festivities. Thank you again to all who make this event possible year after year!
October 11, 2016 – NEWH/Arizona’s 3rd Annual Golf FUNdraiser was held at Top Golf in Scottsdale, AZ. The "PAR TEE" golf event featured lessons from a golf instructor and a high-tech driving range that brought out the competitive nature in all! The swanky lounge allowed members to enjoy the appetizers, raffle, and silent auction. Attendees were encouraged to wear their crazy golf pants. The golf teams competed to win Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals, bragging rights, and prizes. November 2, 2016 – NEWH/Arizona toured Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. This four-diamond resort and spa is a sleek, modern high-end resort that is owned by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and features a thrilling casino, six restaurants, a concert showroom, over 113,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor meeting space, 496 guest rooms, and a cultural art display that is recognized as the largest Native American collection outside of a museum. Milt Elliott, Senior Associate Interior Designer, and Michelle Purcell, Interior Designer, lead the walking tour. Attendees began at the newly built Sunwatcher Bar. Refreshing cocktails sponsored by BOLON were enjoyed while appreciating the adjacent pool and cabanas. Design challenges of recently completed projects around the property were highlighted, such as the award winning Palo Verde Bar and Blue Coyote Cantina in the interior atrium. FFKR Architects and Peter Hayes from Meltdown Glass shared insight into the challenges of designing, coordinating, and manufacturing the LED glass stairs. The tour concluded at the Hotel’s Orange Sky Lounge on the 15th floor where attendees gathered to network and appreciate panoramic scenic views.
Thursday, September 22, 2016 – NEWH/AZ toured Scottsdale’s historic and hip Hotel Valley Ho. Attendees began the evening at Cafe ZuZu and indulged in new signature fall cocktails at happy hour sponsored by Interface Carpet. 3rd story Architects and Interior Designers refurbished 185 guest rooms and six suites at the timeless Hotel Valley Ho in 2015. Ace Bailey, President of Ultimate Art and Cultural Tours, lead the historic tour that allowed participants to explore the iconic property and Anissa Mendil, Director of Interior Design at 3rd story, provided insight into how mid-century elements were reinterpreted to create a unique and comfortable guest experience.
July 23, 2016 – NEWH/Arizona’s first philanthropic event of the year was held at ICM Food and Clothing Bank in downtown Phoenix. ICM (formally known as Interfaith Cooperative Ministries) helps by providing an immediate response to families in need. ICM helps to meet basic needs by supplying food, clothing and shoes, soap and shampoo, baby formula, and other material goods six days a week and offering free medical clinic services once a month. NEWH members volunteered their time to help ensure 165 families in need received clothing and toiletries.
ICM accepts financial contributions and welcomes those who are able to donate their time. In addition, material goods are always appreciated to keep ICM stocked for clients. Items in need include: Non-perishable food items, new or used clothes, shoes, socks, and all other clothing articles for women, men, and children (ICM always runs out of children’s and men’s clothing and shoes), small household items such as dishes, pots, and linens, toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, body wash, laundry detergent, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes), and baby items.
On behalf of the 165 families that received assistance, thank you to Linda Hinojosa, Michelle Purcell, Patti Cruse, Natalie Kanter, Joni Beals, Rebecca Brittain, Shannon Vance, and Mary Blanchard for extending a helping hand towards those in a time of hardship.
Thursday, June 9th, 2016 – NEWH/Arizona toured the new Harkins Camelview Theater at Scottsdale Fashion Square designed by Bar Napkin Productions. The new Camelview 14 pays homage to the original Camelview 5 theater that was built in 1973. Jeffrey Rausch from BNP provided insight to how this was achieved with the recreation of the mushroom lights and the use of original memorabilia throughout the cinema. The theater’s atmosphere has film fans speculating whether or not they are part of the production team and behind the scenes. The walking tour encouraged attendees to be observant and appreciate the movie trivia incorporated into the design. Moviegoers who appreciate independent and foreign films as well as those who want to see the latest and greatest will surely be comfortable in the custom designed recliners that are extremely comfy! The Verite Lounge is the perfect place to debate film details and admire the new Harkins Camelview Theater’s creative and inspiring interior design.
May 4th, 2016 – The Arizona and Las Vegas chapters collaborated to host a joint happy hour at the theatrical SAKE ROK during the HD Expo 2016. April 20, 2016 – NEWH/Arizona’s first FUNdraiser of the year, Wine & Dine Under The Stars, was held at Pinnacle Design’s Rooftop Terrace. Five of the Valley’s most promising culinary students collaborated with a Professional Valley Chef to create an appetizer or dessert to be paired with wine. Student members included Angel Cruz from the Art Institute of Phoenix, Antonio Padilla from the Arizona Culinary Institute, Kandy Hall from the Art Institute of Phoenix, Natasha Wiener and Rebecca Mellen from Scottsdale Community College Culinary Arts, and Sylvia Martin from the Art Institute of Phoenix. The judges included Kristin Wolfe from daisycake.com/KriskaDECOR and Allison DeVane, founder of TEASPRESSA and featured on ABC’s “Shark Tank”. The best dish and wine pairing was voted on by attendees and the judges agreed, awarding a $1,500 Culinary Scholarship to Antonio Padilla who created a Beef Tartare with Deviled Quail Egg paired with Cabernet.
The Arizona Chapter also celebrated its 20th Anniversary. Markie Rhoads, the Founding President of the Arizona Chapter, recognized past Board of Directors including 8 former Board Presidents. A collection of photos from the May 1995 Chartering Party at Lake Pleasant brought back memories! Mary Blanchard, Arizona Chapter President, recognized Diane Berg, with Hill & Associates, for her dedicated service and leadership contributions to the NEWH Arizona Chapter by awarding her the Joyce Johnson Award. Diane Berg dutifully served on the board as Vice President through to Executive Advisor, but then chose to serve another year as Membership Director, in part, to continue to provide guidance to the relatively new NEWH 2015 Board Members. Everyone’s hard work has made it possible for NEWH/Arizona to award over $107,000 in scholarships over the past 20 years! Markie Rhoads also announced the recipients of scholarships for 2016: Sylvia Martin from the Art Institute of Phoenix was awarded a $1,500 scholarship while Juan Aguilar from Scottsdale Community College was awarded the Markie Rhoads Scholarship worth $2,000.
This sold-out fundraiser was a tremendous success thanks to the Wine & Dine Under The Stars Committee: Joni Beals with Armstrong, Katie Byrnes with Shaw Hospitality, Amber Dickinson with ReSource Arizona, Amy Willaby with Sokol-Hohne Studios, Debbie Christensen with DC Sales, Kathleen Moreland with USF Contract, and Shannon Vance with Longust.

Thank you CCS for providing the PA System needed to address such a large crowd. March 31, 2016 NEWH/Arizona’s first Sundowner of the year was held at the newly opened Postino WineCafe. Not only does Postino offer approachable wines, they provide delicious accompaniments prepared with local ingredients. The assortment of Bruschetta has always been a favorite at our events. This new location at Kierland Commons in Scottsdale features a sprawling and beautiful indoor-outdoor space that is funky, fun, and embodies a welcoming vibe. February 18, 2016 – The NEWH/Arizona Chapter held the 2016 Membership Event at Bar Napkin Productions’ Penthouse Office in the heart of Phoenix. The 2016 Board of Directors were introduced and attendees enjoyed delicious appetizers, wonderful conversation, and a beautiful sunset. A raffle was held to win Golf for two at McCormic Ranch Country Club in Scottsdale, AZ. Congratulations to Melody Van Ess for taking home the prize. December 9, 2015 – NEWH/Arizona recently participated in a community service event titled Christmas for the Troops. It was held at UEB Builders in Scottsdale, AZ. The Chapter supported Robert Dillie – Air Force Securities Squadron in Qatar that totaled of 120, including 15 women. On December 9th, 2015, over 30 members and their families attended the event and packaged a record 84 boxes of wrapped Christmas gifts. click thumbnail to right to see entire photo album
October 9, 2015 – NEWH/Arizona’s 2nd Annual Golf Tournament 2015 – Swinging FORE Scholarships. The Fundraiser was held on October 9, 2015 at McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ.
