June 15, 2023 – Our hotel tour and panel talk was a success! We gathered as an industry to learn about the Washington Marriott Capitol Hill hotel’s journey from concept to construction completion, which began in 2012. They shared their stories, inspirations, and contributions to the mixed-use development with representatives from the owner/developer, operator, architect, design firm, and Marriott’s project team. We toured the hotel to experience its artwork and purposeful design using sophisticated metal and wood combinations. stay tuned for event pictures!

 

March 28, 2023 – March 28, 2023 – NEWH/Washington DC Metro Chapter held a membership drive at the Royal Sands Social Club. The 2023 TopID winners were recognized and new members were welcomed! (click here for full slideshow)

 

 

 

 

April 23, 2019 – NEWH DC hosted an intimate, member only “Mingle + Match” event at Marriott HQ in Bethesda, MD.  Newer design professionals (interns, students, and junior designers) were paired up with design executives from Streetsense, Baskerville, //3877 Design, and BANDURA design.  General admission mingled and networked over a nacho bar and toured the Marriott Underground, which is all of the Marriott brand model rooms.  Tour guides from each of these brands were in each room to answer questions and show off their brand.

 

 

January 31, 2019 – NEWH DC Chapter 2019 year is off to a roaring start with the Membership Drive and Masquerade in January held at SAX DC. The event was complete with three performances, including an aerialist and flappers, and a panel discussion about Food and Beverage Trends in the Hospitality Industry. Members competed for best mask aesthetic to win $350 in cash prizes. The event honored DC metro’s Top IDs and honored Laurie Woliung of Marriott International with the Joyce Johnson Award.

 

 

February 7-9, 2019 – A few members of the board and four scholarship recipients were off to Miami, FL for the NEWH leadership conference. Two NEWH DC members were inducted in to the newly created NEWH College of Fellows. They are Helen Reed of H. L. Reed Design and former NEWH national president and Lynda Welte, Multi-Line Manufacturers’ Sales Representative and past NEWH DC Chapter president.  The DC Metro chapter was prominent in almost every one of the panels/ breakout sessions. For one of the excursions, a few DC metro members were seen speeding on the water in a speed boat adventure.

 

 

March 19, 2019 – NEWH DC held our first Toasty Tuesday Hotel Tour at the MOXY DC. The event sold out in less than four days becoming one of our most successful programming events before it even was held.  The guest were a mix of students, designers, and vendors who enjoyed a DJ and a spread of appetizers while networking. Tours of the guestrooms were given by designers from Marriott who worked on the Moxy brand.  We also held our first INSTAGAME and gave away $250 earrings donated by the Bo. Group and $150 in visa gift cards.  Morgan Brodey from NEWH NYC chapter, who founded Toasty Tuesday, attended the event and offered a Jalco showerhead prize for the INSTAGAME.

 

Monday, October 2, 2017 – The annual fundraising benefit for NEWH DC Scholarship Funds, was financially supported by Marriott International as Title Sponsor. Marriott is long-running in their support of NEWH scholarships, programing, mentorships and programming. Laurie Woliung, Marriott International and Director of Fundraising exceeded all prior fundraising records with a stellar group of volunteers, golfing foursomes and generous sponsors. Guests came nationwide for this sell-out event. The night prior, everyone gathered at Bethesda Marriott, Pooks Hill for a fun “meet and greet”. The Tournament concluded with an incredible feast and awards ceremony. The winning team won the coveted “Green Bathrobe” a hospitality industry twist on The Master’s “green jacket”.

June 21, 2016 – At the final installment of NEWH DC Metro’s Experience Your City series, event attendees had a wonderful evening networking and learning about Union Kitchen’s role as a local DC-area food business incubator. The evening included a Q+A with Jonas Singer, Union Kitchen co-founder, tours of the kitchen facilities and tastings from Union Kitchen members. On February 25, 2016, over 35 students joined NEWH Washington DC Metro board members, Marriott emerging designers and senior leaders for an energizing evening of exploration and networking. The event kicked-off in the Marriott Innovation Lab (dubbed “The Underground”). The Lab is top secret, typically off limits to the public, therefore, attendees received an exclusive, private peek at how the brand tests new concepts and designs. Next, the group of passionate hospitality industry students received invaluable tips on forging their career path followed by a casual networking roundtable organized by hotel development, hotel operations and hospitality interior design areas of interest. The roundtable was followed by the opportunity to explore the Marriott sample rooms, which contained inspiring, innovative designs that shape the following brands: AC Hotels, Residence Inn, SpringHill Suites (in collaboration with West Elm), Fairfield Inn & Suites, TownPlace Suites (in collaboration with The Container Store), Marriott and Renaissance. November 7, 2015 – Team NEWH DC Metro participated in the 2015 Heart Walk in our nation’s capital to support the American Heart Association in fighting cardiovascular diseases – America’s number one cause of death. October 27, 2015– Our chapter’s annual NEWH DC Metro Scholarship & Awards Event and Membership Drive honored nine talented and deserving students with a passion for the hospitality industry at AMP in Bethesda, MD.  We were excited to award a total of $37,000 in scholarship funds to these remarkable students, bringing our grand total of scholarships awarded since 1999 to $285,300.

This year the NEWH DC Metro chapter welcomed guest speaker Kia Weatherspoon, Allied ASID and President, Determined by Design who “got candid” with students and professionals about the bridging the gap between baby boomers and millennials. Her dynamic presentation inspired both students and professionals to find common ground when navigating the generational divide. June 22, 2015 – Montgomery County Human Society is the beneficiary of the many donations of pet food, toys, leashes, colors, cleaning supplies and more. With great community volunteers on hand, we learn more about this incredible agency. This is a “no-kill” shelter! We learned that the pets that they adopt come from other area pet shelters. They will take back any pet adopted, at anytime. NEWH Washington DC Community Service is headed up under the leadership of Ailene Werner who is employed by Jamie Stern Design. This coming winter, she will be launching the efforts for St. Ann’s Center for children, youth and families. Great job NEWH Washington DC Chapter. You did GOOD! Attendees experienced the perfect combination of fun and fundraising, as the highly anticipated event offered a full day of golfing, prizes, gifts and beverages. Proceeds from the tournament allow NEWH, Inc. to continue to award scholarships to students pursuing careers in the hospitality industry. This year, the Washington DC Metro Chapter awarded $20,000 in scholarship funds to area students interested in pursuing careers in the hospitality industry. October 2013. With 144 golfers and 240 dinner guests – a SOLD OUT event – the chapter braved thunderstorms and tornado warnings to enjoy a day of golf and networking!
