July 29, 2021 – The NEWH LA Founding Chapter hosted our Diversity and Hospitality Panel at Helm’s Bakery Atrium in Culver City CA. Panelists included dynamic women of color who are leaders in the hospitality industry. Felecia Fisher-Shamu, CEO of Vitality Casegoods, Restoration and Fine Furniture Manufacturing, Genelle Brooks-Petty, Principal Designer BPS Interior Designer, and Adaeze Cadet, Design Principal at HOK. This was the Los Angeles Chapters’ first in-person event since February 2020, and was attended by over 50 guests who enjoyed light hors d’oeuvres and drinks sponsored by Mahram and Bolon. Questions to the panelist included, “How do you think the industry can be more inclusive?’ and “ What can the hospitality industry do to reach more students of color?”. All of the panelists spoke on mentorship and reaching students before high school. It is critical for young people to be introduced to hospitality careers as they are developing their future dreams, to expand their awareness of opportunities.
“Fewer than one in five new architects identifies as a person of color, and in 2018 only 3 percent of architects who completed the AXP were Black, while 15 percent identified as Asian, and less than 1 percent as Hispanic or Latino, according to NCARB. Those numbers become even smaller among African American women. Only 0.3 percent of architects are Black women, according to architecture magazine Curbed.”
“Growth in Racial Diversity Among Architects is Slow, but Experts Say the Conversation Continues”
As we wrapped up the evening, Adaeze Cadet shared her perspective, “Our industry has come a long way and I am excited to be pushing that forward, where we have more diverse voices as part of the narrative to really shape our environment in a meaningful way!”
We feel that it is critical that the Los Angeles Chapter of NEWH continues to lead the way in showcasing diversity in our community. This event was spearheaded by our EID Board member and International VP of EID, Lanee S. Burns and Jezzica N. Lindkrantz, VP of Development.

March 14, 2019 – Hospitality Fashion Challenge Runway Event at BDWest – This BDwest signature event is the culmination of an utterly unique, annual design competition benefiting NEWH. In this year’s finale, leading design-firm teams unveiled couture fashions crafted from scraps of tile, carpet and other reusable design elements donated by BDwest exhibitors. Attendees mixed, mingled and cheered for their favorite “garments” to victory as they were modeled, runway style, then judged and auctioned on the former trading floor of L.A.’s Pacific Coast Stock Exchange—now a Historic Cultural Landmark Building, a spectacular nightclub, which was the perfect venue for this celebration of creativity and ingenuity. click here to view slideshow
